A few habits to keep you, your Z2, and your burrs safe.
Before you turn it on
- Always plug your Z2 into a grounded outlet using the power cord included for your country. Skip travel plug adapters. See Power Cord and Plug Type for Your Z2.
- Make sure the bean funnel and magnetic chute knocker are securely in place.
- Set the dial above 200µm before you turn the grinder on, and check your zero point after shipping. See Setting the Zero Point on Your Z2.
- Never start the Z2 with the burrs touching. There is no lock at zero, and the dial can turn past it. Running with the burrs touching for an extended time can damage them.
- Never turn the dial more than 2000µm (slightly more than two full rotations coarser). The dial can unscrew from the front assembly.
While it is running
- Keep fingers, hands, and objects away from the exit chute, the burr chamber, and the auger while the grinder is plugged in.
- Grind only coffee beans from reputable suppliers.
- Do not pour liquid into the funnel.
- Do not change the RPM while you are actively grinding beans. Below 300 RPM, feed beans slowly. See Z2 Grind Settings and RPM Guide.
- If the grinder stops or stalls, turn it OFF and follow Troubleshooting: Z2 Stopped, Stalled, or Shut Off.
Cleaning and maintenance
- Before any maintenance, turn the grinder OFF, unplug it, and toggle the power switch 2 to 3 times to release any remaining charge.
- The front assembly is heavy. Support it with one hand when you remove it.
- The magnets are very strong. Watch your fingers.
- Remove burrs by pulling straight out. Never pry with screwdrivers or metal tools.
- Use only one matching set of burr pins or screws at a time.
- Never immerse the grinder base in water or any other liquid.
- Leave the grease in the adjustment mechanism. It is designed to run lubricated.
- Get comfortable using your Z2 before you open it, and only take it apart as far as our guides describe: Opening, Cleaning, and Closing Your Z2 and Changing Burrs on Your Z2.
When to stop using your grinder
Stop grinding if your burrs are chipped or damaged. Damaged burrs can cause inconsistent grind quality and further damage to the grinder. See Changing Burrs on Your Z2.
