The Z2 motor has built-in protection that quietly watches for jams, heat, and power problems. When one of these features activates, it does not mean anything is wrong with your grinder. Find your situation below.
It stopped suddenly mid-grind
Motor stall protection. If the burrs jam completely, the Z2 briefly applies maximum torque to clear the obstruction. If the burrs do not move within a fraction of a second, the motor disengages to protect itself.
- Turn the switch OFF and unplug.
- Open the grinder (see Opening, Cleaning, and Closing Your Z2) and remove the foreign debris that is jammed (likely a small rock or underroasted beans).
- Reassemble, plug in, and switch ON.
With certain burrs, at very fine settings with very low RPM, the motor can stall. We recommend at least 300 RPM for everyday grinding, and feeding beans slowly at lower speeds. See Z2 Grind Settings and RPM Guide.
It stopped with a loud bang
A small rock or stone mixed in with the beans has most likely lodged between the burrs.
- Unplug and toggle the switch 2 to 3 times to discharge any electricity.
- Empty the funnel.
- Open the grinder and look for a bean-sized or smaller object.
- Remove it with something non-metallic, like a toothpick or brush handle. Do not use metal tools.
- Clean the chamber and burrs and check the burrs for chips or cracks.
A tiny chip on a burr edge may not affect grind quality, but keep an eye on it. Large chips or cracks mean the burrs should be replaced. Send us photos at info@zerno.co if you are unsure.
It turned itself off after sitting
Automatic shutoff. If the Z2 is on but not grinding for 10 minutes, it switches itself off. Turn the switch OFF, then ON.
It slowed down or stopped during a long session
Thermal protection. The Z2 gradually reduces torque as it warms up and may pause until it cools. Give it a few minutes.
It stopped briefly, then kept going
Power protection. Voltage fluctuations or current spikes cause a brief pause. No action needed beyond restarting if necessary.
It trips my outlet (GFCI)
Some GFCI outlets are more sensitive than others. If your Z2 trips a GFCI outlet, please contact support at info@zerno.co.
It will not turn on at all
Check that the power cord is fully seated at both ends, try another outlet, and make sure the switch is fully in the up (ON) position. The Z2 runs self-checks each time it starts and will not run if something is outside safe limits. If these steps do not work, please contact support at info@zerno.co with a short video. Please do not disassemble the grinder beyond what this guide describes.
