A small amount of retention is normal for any grinder. Anything under 0.3g is within industry standard. The Z2 has two built-in tools to keep it there.
Purge Mode
Purge spins the burrs at full speed to clear leftover grounds from the grind chamber (sometimes called "exchange").
- Hold the power switch in the down position for 2 to 3 seconds.
- Release once the chamber is clear.
We recommend a quick purge after each use. Purge Mode also helps clear false chirp; see Troubleshooting: False Chirp and Zero Point Shift on the Z2.
Magnetic chute knocker
- Rotate the bottom half of the chute clockwise until it reaches the end of its travel.
- Let go. The magnets snap it back and knock loose grounds into your cup.
Use it after each dose. To remove and reinstall the chute for cleaning, see Opening, Cleaning, and Closing Your Z2.
RDT (Ross Droplet Technique)
Static makes grounds cling, especially in dry climates and in winter. Put your beans in the dosing cup, add 1 to 2 sprays of water, cover and shake gently, then pour into the funnel. Too much water can make grounds stick inside the grinder, so start with one spray and adjust.
Stuck beans and popcorning
If a bean or two stays in the auger, use Purge Mode or turn the grinder on and off a couple of times. If beans bounce around in the funnel ("popcorning"), pour them in slowly rather than all at once. More help: Troubleshooting: Stuck Burr, Tapping Sounds, and Stuck Beans on the Z2.
Still seeing more than 0.3g?
Weigh your dose in and out on a precision scale. Oil and fines build up over time, so a cleaning often helps (see Opening, Cleaning, and Closing Your Z2). If it is still high, email info@zerno.co with photos of your workflow and grind chamber.
