Welcome to the Z2. Every grinder is hand-assembled in Chicago, precision aligned, and tested with about 20 grams of coffee before it ships, so a little residual coffee at unboxing is normal.
What's in the box
The Z2 grinder with its stainless steel feed auger pre-installed, front wood accent piece, magnetic chute knocker, stainless steel funnel, stainless steel magnetic dosing cup, IEC C13 power cord, magnetic burr removal tools, cleaning brush, 2.5mm Wera screwdriver, and an RDT spray bottle.
Your service kit includes dowel pins, M5 traditional burr screws, 3mm and 2mm Wera hex keys, and two spare funnel O-rings. Some accessories are packed separately inside the larger box, so check all packaging carefully. Any add-ons you purchased are in the box too.
Set up in six steps
- Remove the grinder and all components from the packaging.
- Place it on a stable, level surface near an outlet. Make sure the power switch is in the OFF (middle) position.
- Check that the O-rings are seated in the funnel opening, then push the funnel in with a gentle twist until it seats.
- Plug the power cord into the grinder, then into a grounded outlet.
- Place your dosing cup under the chute knocker.
- Set the dial above 200µm before turning the grinder on, and verify the zero point, since it can shift in transit. See Setting the Zero Point on Your Z2.
Know your switch
Up is ON. Middle is OFF. Holding the switch down for 2 to 3 seconds activates Purge Mode, which spins the burrs at full speed to clear the grind chamber. See Purge Mode, the Chute Knocker, and Reducing Retention on Your Z2.
Before your first cup
Run a few grams of coffee through to clear any grounds left from testing. Then start coarse and work finer. Always make grind adjustments with the grinder running to keep particles from getting stuck between the burrs. Starting points are in the Z2 Grind Settings and RPM Guide.
Never start the grinder with the burrs touching. There is no lock at zero, and the dial can turn past it. Starting one or two turns coarser and working finer is a good habit.
Never turn the dial more than 2000µm (slightly more than two full rotations coarser). The dial can unscrew from the front assembly.
Seasoning
Coated burrs (such as ULF and SSP Brew) usually settle within 1 to 2kg of coffee. Cast burrs (such as SSP Lab Sweet) settle within about 5kg. If you want to season deliberately, grind 500g at a time at about 500µm and 900 RPM, resting 5 to 10 minutes between sessions. Older beans you would not drink anyway are perfect for this. Recheck your zero point once the burrs settle.
Foam marks
Shipping foam can leave a temporary imprint on the body. A quick wipe with a damp microfiber towel removes it.
