The zero point is where the burrs first touch. It is your source of truth for every grind setting. Your Z2 is zeroed at burr chirp before it ships, so it is ready out of the box.
Video:
Tools: 2.5mm Wera screwdriver. Time: 5 to 10 minutes.
When to rezero
Every time you remove the front assembly (cleaning or burr swaps), after installing new burrs, and once new burrs have settled. The shift is often only about 5µm, but rezeroing takes seconds. You do not need to rezero to switch between brew methods.
Steps
- Turn the grinder off. Remove the wood accent piece from the front assembly.
- Rotate the adjustment knob clockwise until the burrs touch and you feel natural resistance. Then loosen it ½ to 1 full turn counterclockwise and turn the grinder ON.
- Slowly tighten the knob until you hear the first burr "chirp," then immediately turn the grinder OFF. Running with the burrs touching can damage them.
- Hold the knob with one hand and loosen the center screw 1 to 2 full turns with the 2.5mm screwdriver. Do not remove the screw.
- The micron dial now moves freely. Set it to 0 while holding the knob still.
- Tighten the center screw until snug. Do not overtighten; it only needs to stop the dial from rotating.
- Replace the wood accent piece.
- Loosen the knob ½ to 1 full turn counterclockwise, set your grind size, and turn the grinder ON.
True chirp versus false chirp
True chirp is a sharp metal-on-metal sound. If you hear a softer rubbing sound and feel stiffness well above where zero should be, it may be compacted coffee, not metal. See Troubleshooting: False Chirp and Zero Point Shift on the Z2.
If the center screw will not loosen
Use a good quality 2.5mm hex key for extra leverage and turn counterclockwise. It can be tight after a big change in climate. If it still will not move, stop before the head strips and follow Troubleshooting: Stuck or Stripped Zero Point Screw on the Z2. If that does not work, email info@zerno.co.
Recalibration is different
Motor recalibration is a separate Z2 procedure for the RPM and motor, unrelated to the grind dial. See Troubleshooting: RPM Knob Not Working or Clicking (Motor Recalibration).
