Burr swaps on the Z2 take about 5 to 10 minutes, so feel free to swap as often as you like.
Burr orientation on the Z2
The stationary burr attaches to the removable front assembly. The rotating burr stays inside the grinder body. If your burrs are labeled "Top" and "Bottom" (or "T" and "B"), the Bottom burr goes inside the body and the Top burr goes on the front assembly.
Burr pins and screws
The Z2 fits a wide range of 80mm flat burrs. It ships with 3mm blind burr pins (SSP and Weber style) installed. Your service kit has alternate hardware for other styles, including 4mm blind burr pins (Tanzania style) and traditional M5 screws (Ditting style). The pins sit behind the burr on the face of the burr carrier. Use only one matching set of pins or screws at a time. If you lose a 3mm blind burr pin (SSP and Weber style), the replacement is a 3mm diameter by 8mm long ISO 2338 dowel pin. If you lose a 4mm blind burr pin, you can source a replacement locally: it is a 4mm diameter by 8mm long ISO 2338 dowel pin. These pins come in undersized and oversized versions, so choose the undersized one. Swapping between two burr sets from the same manufacturer needs no change.
The Z2 does not accept 64mm burrs. Not sure which set to get? See Choosing Burrs for Your Z2.
Blind burrs
Tools: magnetic burr removal tools.
- Turn the grinder OFF, unplug, and open it (see Opening, Cleaning, and Closing Your Z2).
- Place the magnetic tools on either side of the burr at 9 and 3 o'clock. Use a gentle rocking motion to lift it from the carrier. Brushing away loose grounds around the carrier first makes this easier.
- Blind burr pins are friction fit and can come loose during removal. Keep track of them.
- Clean the carrier. Place the new burr and slowly rotate it until it snaps into place magnetically. There should be no visible gap between burr and carrier.
- Close the grinder and rezero (see Setting the Zero Point on Your Z2).
Traditional burrs
Tools: flathead screwdriver (not included).
- Turn the grinder OFF, unplug, and open it.
- Remove the two screws holding each burr, clean the carrier, and lift the burr off with the magnetic tools.
- Install the new burr, making sure it seats fully, and secure it with the screws (recommended 1.5 Nm; a torque driver is not required).
- Close the grinder and rezero.
