The spindle is the rotating burr carrier inside the Z2 grinder body. It holds your rotating burr and sits in front of the auger and the main bearing. Most owners never need to remove it. This guide covers when it helps and how to take it out and put it back in the right position.
When you might need this
Remove the spindle when support asks you to, or when you are tracking down a noise that a normal burr cleaning did not fix.
Coffee fines trapped behind the spindle can cause these sounds, and that is a quick clean. Taking parts off one at a time also shows exactly where a sound comes from.
Before you start
Unplug the grinder. Have the hex keys from your service kit ready. If you are using your own, a 3mm and a 2mm hex key cover the auger and spindle. Have an Expo or Sharpie marker on hand.
If you run the grinder during testing with the front assembly off, keep it at a low RPM, do not use Purge Mode, and keep your fingers clear of the spinning parts.
Find the source of a noise
Work from front to back and run the grinder briefly after each step to hear whether the noise is still there.
- Remove the front assembly (see Opening, Cleaning, and Closing Your Z2).
- Remove the rotating burr from the spindle.
- Remove the auger.
- Remove the spindle.
Take a short video after the step where the noise stops, or after the last step if it never stops.
Removing the spindle
- Before you loosen anything, use the marker to draw a line across the spindle and the bearing section in the middle of the body. The spindle can mount in 3 positions, and this mark shows you which one it came from. (Not shown in video)
- Follow the video to remove the spindle screws and lift the spindle out.
- Brush out any coffee fines behind the spindle and around the bearing section.
Reinstalling the spindle
- Line up your marker line so the spindle goes back in the same position it came out of.
- Reinstall the spindle screws, then the auger, rotating burr, and front assembly.
- Check your zero point after reassembly. See Setting the Zero Point on Your Z2.
