Welcome to the Z1. Every grinder is hand-assembled and hand-aligned in Chicago and tested with about 20 grams of coffee before it ships, so a little residual coffee at unboxing is normal.
What's in the box
The Z1 grinder with the stainless steel Medium Feed auger pre-installed, V2 stainless steel funnel, one piece chute, stainless steel magnetic dosing cup, RDT spray bottle, cleaning brush, 2.5mm Wera screwdriver, front wood accent piece, magnetic burr removal tools, IEC C5 power cord, and your Quality Control Verification Card.
Your service kit includes 2mm and 3mm Wera hex keys, a spare 5A 250VAC time-delay fuse, spare funnel O-rings, burr pads, and either traditional burr screws or blind burr pins, depending on the burrs you ordered. Some accessories are packed separately inside the larger box, so check all packaging carefully.

Set up in seven steps
- Remove the grinder and all components from the packaging.
- Place it on a stable, level surface near an outlet. Make sure the power switch is OFF (down).
- Check that the O-rings are seated in the funnel opening, then push the funnel in with a gentle twist until it seats.
- The one piece chute is packed inside your dosing cup. Snap it into place under the grind chamber with the notched side facing the grinder.
- Plug the power cord into the grinder, then into a grounded outlet with the voltage shown on your grinder's backplate.
- Place the dosing cup under the chute.
- Set the dial above 200µm before turning the grinder on, since the zero point can shift in transit. See Setting the Zero Point on Your Z1.
Warning:
Never turn the grinder on with the burrs touching. Doing so blows the internal safety fuse. Always start coarser and work finer.
Never turn the dial more than 1400µm (slightly more than two full rotations coarser). The dial can unscrew from the front assembly and produce inconsistent grounds.
Seasoning
Machined burrs (such as SSP HU, UMV1, and MPV2) usually settle within 1 to 2kg of coffee. Cast burrs (such as SSP CV2 and CV3) settle around 5kg. To season deliberately, grind 500g at a time at about 500µm, resting 5 to 10 minutes between sessions. Recheck your zero point once the burrs settle. See Seasoning the Burrs on Your Z1 for more information
Your first grinds
Make grind adjustments while the grinder is running so particles do not get stuck between the burrs. Start coarse and work finer.
