Burr orientation on the Z1
The burr labeled "Top," "Fixed," or "Stationary" mounts to the carrier inside the grinder body. The "Bottom" or "Rotary" burr mounts to the removable prebreaker assembly with the auger. Mounting them reversed may impact grind quality.
Blind burrs
Tools: magnetic burr removal tools. Time: 5 to 10 minutes.
- Turn the grinder OFF, unplug, and open it (see Opening, Cleaning, and Closing Your Z1).
- Place the magnetic tools on either side of the burr at 9 and 3 o'clock and use a rocking motion to lift it off. Brushing loose grounds away first makes this easier. For the rotating burr on the prebreaker assembly, a firm tap of the assembly against your palm often releases it.
- Clean the burr carrier before installing the new burr. Make sure the burr pins line up with the holes in the burr.
- Close the grinder and rezero (see Setting the Zero Point on Your Z1).
Do not overtighten your burr pins. Tighten each pin until snug, then back it off 1/8 to 1/4 turn counterclockwise. The burrs stay securely seated and come off much more easily next time. Overtightening your burr pins may lead to a very challenging removal process next time.
Traditional burrs
Tools: flathead screwdriver (not included). Time: 5 to 10 minutes.
- Turn the grinder OFF, unplug, and open it.
- Remove the three screws on each burr and lift it off. Clean the burr carrier.
- Install the new burr on the burr pads from your service kit and secure it with the three screws.
- Close the grinder and rezero.
Switching from blind to traditional burrs
- Remove the blind burr pins from the burr carrier with the 2.5mm screwdriver.
- Install the foam burr pads from your service kit into the carrier.
- Mount the traditional burrs with a flathead screwdriver and the included screws.
