Before any maintenance: disconnect the power cord and toggle the switch 2 to 3 times to release any remaining charge. Then remove the cup, chute, and funnel.
Tools: 2.5mm screwdriver and cleaning brush. Time: 5 to 10 minutes for a regular clean, 15 to 20 minutes for a deep clean.
Opening the grinder
- Make sure the grinder is OFF and unplugged.
- Loosen the two visible front screws with the 2.5mm screwdriver. Support the adjustment assembly with one hand and pull the screws out.
- Set the front assembly on a microfiber towel or soft surface.
- Carefully pull out the prebreaker assembly (the part with the auger and the rotating burr).
Cleaning
- Remove the funnel and tap it gently to release beans or grounds.
- Pull the one piece chute down, remove it, and brush grounds off the chute and the grinder base.
- Brush the stationary burr (inside the grinder body), the rotating burr (on the prebreaker assembly), and the surrounding chamber. A small vacuum helps with stubborn grounds.
Please do not clean the grease out of the adjustment mechanism. It is designed to run lubricated.
Closing the grinder
- Reinsert the prebreaker assembly, making sure its alignment key seats in the motor shaft. It should slide in with light pressure. If it needs force, rotate it slightly until it clicks and drops into place.
- Make sure the outer ring of the adjustment assembly and the grind chamber are free of grounds.
- Hold the adjustment assembly firmly against the grind chamber and line up both screws, keeping it flat and parallel.
- Alternately tighten both screws until secure but not overtightened.
- Install the funnel and one piece chute before plugging the grinder back in.
- Set the dial above 200µm so the burrs are not touching, then rezero (see Setting the Zero Point on Your Z1).
Taking your Z1 apart does not affect its alignment. The parts are machined and matched as a set.
