The magnet under the cup catch came loose (it clicks when you place the cup). An easy at-home fix: dab a little acetone around the magnet to loosen it, gently pry it out with something that will not scratch, wipe the spot clean, apply a small amount of cyanoacrylate glue (superglue), check the magnet's polarity is the right way around, press it in for about 30 seconds, and let it cure for a couple of hours. Using a third-party shaker? See Troubleshooting: Dosing Cup or Shaker Not Seating on the Z1 (Magnet Polarity).
Can I use a shorter power cord? Yes. The Z1 uses a standard, replaceable IEC 60320 C5 cord (often called a "cloverleaf" cord). In the US, choose one with a grounded three-prong plug. See Power Cord and Plug Type for Your Z1.
Streaks or a checkered pattern on a new grinder. Residue from the stainless cleaner we use in the final wipe-down. Glass cleaner, a damp microfiber, or a light mist of isopropyl alcohol removes it.
Light scratches on the base. Usually coffee grounds trapped under the dosing cup. A metal polish restores the shine.
The dial indicator feels loose. Tighten the center screw under the wood accent piece (see Setting the Zero Point on Your Z1).
The dial feels stiff. Usually compacted grounds; see Troubleshooting: False Chirp and Zero Point Shift on the Z1. Please do not clean the grease from the adjustment mechanism.
No set screws in the burr carrier holes. Newer Z1s (around serial number 500 and up) use stronger magnets, so those threaded holes no longer need screws. Nothing is missing.
Does opening the grinder myself void the warranty? No. Maintenance and the repairs we walk you through do not void your warranty.
